Historical Fashion Reference Material

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 3, 2009, 4:12 PM

The list continues to grow!

A few more sites have been added to the list! I still have to sort through some of the other recommendations people have made because it's been so long since I've updated this thing... and I've forgotten to keep track of some stuff @___@;;;

Also, I'd like to direct people over to Googlebooks! Two very good books can be found on there: Fashion: Collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute and The Ladies' Book of Etiquette and Manual of Politeness, which has notes on Victorian dress starting at pg 21. Don't miss out on these two books... because I'm unable to link to them >_>;;;

If you know of a site that features either paintings & pictures or reproductions of historical clothing, let me know and I'll add it to the list. Also feel free to recommend books (I need the full titles and author though). As far as the time period is concerned, it doesn't really matter-- anything from ancient times up through the early 20th century is fine. New sites will be marked with a * next to the link (at least until the next update).

I was going to suggest Vigee Le Brun :P The likes of Lely, van Dyck and Diago Velazquez are good for their respective eras, not forgetting Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds. Not sure if they have specialist websites though :|

There is, however, [link] You can search by different art movements, inc. Baroque, Rococo, etc :) And this is a link to a good Regency/Jane Austen times site with a good fashion section -->

[link]
My first point of call for research is the web gallery of art. [link]

Great for finding heaps of inames (paintings, statues, illuminations etc) from the period you are doing- but it has everything so you need to have enough knowledge to know which stuff is allagorical and not representitive of what people wore.
Do you have Costume Close-up by linda baumgarten, Corsets and crinolines by Norah waugh, or fitting and proper on your list? you may as I just skimmed it, but if you don't thay are all very good.
Great list! Thankyou for sharing it with us.

It's under a lot of construction now but should be excellent when it's finished. Lots of real clothing.
