Forum Event VI: Corsets & Undergarments

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 1, 2008, 4:22 PM

Hey, everyone! ~Seitou here again. Well, I completely lost track of the days and forgot to hold the poll for the next Forum Event >____>;;; So I figured we'd just go with the next most popular topic from the last poll...? That means we'll be discussing corsets and undergarments.

Also, the other mods and I have been discussing the possibility of holding contests. We're hoping to hold our first contest around Christmas, only we don't really know what to do for prizes. If anyone would like to donate prizes, please send us a note! If you have ideas for what we could use as prizes, then just leave a comment in this journal :)

Forum Event VI: Corsets and Undergarments: There's a lot that can be said about corsets alone, but we figured it'd be good to let this discussion include all other types of undergarments as well. In hopes of generating an interesting discussion, I went on YouTube just to see if I could find anything interesting about corsets. I found this (2 part video):

Part I: [link]
Part II: [link]

Watch both parts. You'll find this amusing since the whole thing is just ridiculous. Really. Taking a 21st century woman who's never worn a corset before and then forcing her to wear one for 2 days is just an accident waiting to happen >_>

:lmao: I watched something about Regency food the other day and it involved putting a bloke in a corset (well, cinch). If a modern woman complains, it's hardly anything like a man does :D
wow....can't believe how much less lung capacity there was with a corset. It's like ...cut literally in half.

XD.
Most of the bad stuff people say about corsets is not true. If you actually look at old photos, you will never find the 17-inch-waist they talk about in Gone with the Wind, except once or twice. Just like we have normal people and anorexics nowadays, there was moderate lacers (as you didn't have a bra you needed the corset's support for your cleavage) and crazy tight-lacers that everybody found ridicolous. [link]

I happen to find the most unhealthy corsets, the one roundabout 1905, prettiest. Meh.

The girls of today wear trousers to look like boys and transparent blouses to prove that they aren't
I know :XD: I have a book of vintage Victorian photographs and hardly any of the women in there have 20" waists, let alone 17" waists. And you can tell by looking at the extant clothing that most women back then weren't "thin" by today's standards. It's just a really bad stereotype that every single woman practiced tight-lacing. I just hate how people talk about the '20s being the time when women "freed themselves from corsets." We didn't really "free" ourselves from anything since many women today just diet obsessively so they can have that tiny waist :P Corsets aren't unhealthy.... as long as you're wearing it the right way.

My favorite corset is probably the 1880-1890s hour-glass corset. Ironically, the 18th century corset is probably my least favorite shape :XD:

Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind?
Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;
Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm,
Er faßt ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm.

Yeah, corsets did reduce lung capacity, but I'm not too convinced by that video. If you look at the "before" balloon in both shots, it looks a lot larger in the second. Either it's the camera angle or someone swiched it with a larger balloon :XD:

:XD: Men in corsets... They always conveniently forget to mention that in all the fashion books.

It was proven in another modern experiment that women could not eat as much either because their stomach capacity was also diminished :| And i would not want to have a pregnant Victorian either-even their maternity corsets look pretty damn fierce on the bod :O
Well, it is true by the '20s and '30s women were wearing much less clothing than they had 20 years before. I've worn clothing from the '20s and '30s, and they're usually pretty comfortable to wear. Not surprisingly, you can drive in these clothes easily, unlike clothing from the 1890s- I have an 1890's bodice which I've worn, and even without a corset the construction is pretty constrictive.

Of course, in post-corset times, women still wore girdles. UGH.

See, my favorite corsets are the 17th-18th century ones. They look so cute!
